For 2007-2008 Pitt-Bradford was ranked one of the Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the North by U.S. News & World Report in its America's Best Colleges 2008 annual college guide. Of the public institutions named to the list, Pitt-Bradford was ranked seventh. For the fourth consecutive year, The Princeton Review has named Pitt-Bradford as one of the best colleges in the north. This fall, Pitt-Bradford launched new minors in entrepreneurship and finance to help those students who want to start their own business or who are interested in pursuing a career in the area of investments or with a financial institution. The Center for Rural Health Practice received a $900,000 grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, to study the use of alcohol among adolescents. The grant will fund a three-year study to be lead by the Center along with the Pittsburgh Adolescent Alcohol Research Center at Pitt-Oakland. The Science in Motion program, which brings sophisticated chemistry and biology laboratory equipment and educator support to regional schools, served 27,000 students and assisted 78 teachers in 25 different schools during the 2006-07 academic year. Through the TRiO Talent Search Program, 335 students and 12 members of the community are receiving assistance to help them complete school and advance to post-secondary education. A mural, designed and created by Kong Ho, associate professor of art, and two alumnae, is now featured in Bradford City's Old City Hall, which was renovated and recently reopened. Dr. Helene Lawson, professor of sociology, received the Chairs' Faculty Teaching Award for excellence in teaching. She received the award during the university's annual Honors Convocation. Dr. Shailendra Gajanan, associate professor of economics, was selected to coordinate the Pitt in India program for the summer of 2007. In addition to coordinating the program, Gajanan taught two courses: Modern Indian Economy and Design and Development. Pennsylvania Gov. Edward C. Rendell addressed the graduating class of 2007 in April. Two nursing programs at Pitt-Bradford - the RN to BSN and the associate of science in nursing program - received full accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission through the spring of 2012. Three Pitt-Bradford students received Vira I. Heinz Scholarships for Education Abroad, which enabled them to study in another country over the summer. Their destinations were the University of Sussex in Brighton, England; Edge Hill College in Ormskirk, England; and Arcadia University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Two teams of Pitt-Bradford students were named global champions in an international competition of the online Business Strategy Game, the third consecutive year that Pitt-Bradford students have been named champions in the competition. The 2006 edition of Baily's Beads, Pitt-Bradford's literary magazine, received its the highest number of points "993 out of 1,000" in its evaluation from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at Columbia University. The magazine also received All-Columbian Honors in all categories (organization, content, and design), with a perfect score for content, resulting in a gold medalist award. In July, Pitt-Bradford broke ground for a new $7.3 million residence hall, which will house 144 when it opens in Fall 2008. Swarts Hall, Pitt-Bradford's first academic building, is currently undergoing a $6.4 million major renovation, which include a new state-of-the-art distance education center, and a new dedicating nursing teaching center. Most of the newly renovated building will reopen when the Spring Term commences. Men's and women's tennis teams have been added this fall and will compete as a club sport during the current academic year. Starting in Fall 2008, the teams will compete at the NCAA Division III level.
