The Fashion Institute of Technology is a selective, State University of New York college of art and design, business and technology, offering more than forty programs leading to associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees. Known worldwide as the premier educational institution for fashion and its related professions, FIT provides students an unmatched combination of specialized curricula, an in-depth liberal arts education, affordable tuition, and an extraordinary location in the center of New York City, world capital of art and commerce. The college's faculty - drawn from the city's art, business, and design elite - provide a curriculum rich in real-world experience, and their classes (limited to 25 students each) are structured to encourage hands-on participation, problem solving, and self-expression. Field trips, guest lectures, internships, and sponsored competitions draw upon the vast resources of New York City, and introduce students to the challenges and opportunities of their chosen discipline. All of FIT's undergraduate programs are built upon a core of traditional courses in the humanities, providing students with critical thinking abilities, communication skills, and a global perspective. For those looking to further immerse themselves in the world's diverse cultures, study-abroad programs are available in countries from Australia to China, Italy to Mexico. The college's academic facilities reflect the most advanced educational and professional practices, and include design and fine arts studios; a broadcasting studio; cutting and sewing laboratories; a design/research lighting laboratory; display and exhibit design rooms; a fragrance development studio; a knitting lab; a model-making workshop; a multimedia foreign languages laboratory; a graphics printing service bureau; a library containing over 300,000 volumes, 90 searchable databases, and specialized resources like clipping and sketch files and trend forecasting services; and the renowned Museum at FIT, which holds one of the most important collections of fashion and textiles in the world. Four residence halls house approximately 2,300, and all full-time, degree-seeking students are eligible for on-campus residency. FIT offers lifetime placement to all of its alumni, with a graduation employment rate of nearly ninety percent. Well-known alumni include Calvin Klein, Norma Kamali, Nanette Lepore, and Chris Madden but there are thousands more - talented and successful individuals whose shared bond is their FIT education. Whether your interest is in fashion design or fashion business, computer animation or cosmetics, illustration or international trade, FIT is where creativity gets down to business.
