Villa Julie College, which celebrated its 60th anniversary during the 2007-08 academic year, is the third-largest independent coeducational institution in Maryland. More than 3,100 students pursue undergraduate, master???s and adult accelerated degrees at locations in Stevenson and Owings Mills. Villa Julie has undergone tremendous growth in recent years, setting new records for enrollment every year while maintaining high quality academic programs and affordable tuition. Because of the growth in student population and programs, the College is undergoing a transition to university status. The College has positioned itself as a national leader in career education with a distinctive process called Career ArchitectureSM. Students undergo self-discovery exercises as soon as they arrive on campus in order to help them align their career goals with their personal interests and values. This process is now coupled with a Learning Beyond initiative which supplements classroom instruction with internships, cooperative education placements, study abroad, service learning projects and other experiential learning opportunities. This diverse combination of career preparation experiences leads to outstanding career placement for Villa Julie students. Ninety-eight percent of the Class of 2007 found work or moved onto graduate school within six months of graduation, based on a 90 percent response rate. These favorable statistics have remained constant for more than a decade. Since his arrival in 2000, Villa Julie President Kevin J. Manning has overseen Villa Julie???s expansion to a second campus in Owings Mills, allowing the College to transform from a local commuter school to a regional institution with more than 1,200 resident students. The 100-acre Owings Mills campus opened in 2004 and has 10 residence halls, a community center for student events, a dining hall and student activities building, athletic fields and wellness center, and office and classroom space. The growth continues this fall as a 60,000-square-foot facility for the newly created School of Business and Leadership will open to house the already successful business, information technology and paralegal studies programs. In the next several years, Villa Julie will add a new gymnasium and 11th residence hall to the Owings Mills campus. Besides new physical space, Villa Julie has continued to add academic programs to meet the needs of its students. In the fall, Maryland???s first middle school teacher preparation program will open at Villa Julie. This distinctive program will train students to deal with the unique problems facing students in grades four through nine. Under Dr. Manning???s leadership, Villa Julie has added four-year programs in medical technology and public history as well a highly successful online and onsite master???s degree program in forensic studies. The College has expanded its offerings in the sciences and embraced distance-learning technology to bring its successful RN-to-BS nursing program to working nurses across the state. That program is scheduled to go completely online in 2008. Since its founding in 1947, Villa Julie has focused on preparing its students to make positive contributions in the working world after graduation. Even though the College has grown tremendously in the last 60 years, the same focus remains.
